Description

A research fellowship opportunity is currently available in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), in Seattle, Washington.

OASH Region X encompasses the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. This position will support HHS/OASH/Surgeon General and Region X Priorities and Initiatives related to disease prevention and health promotion.  This project will focus on the Tobacco-Free College Campus Initiative (TFCCI), Adult Immunizations/Adult Immunization Plan, Opiate Use Reduction, Let’s Move! Cities, Towns, and Counties (LMCTC) and other public health programs.  The fellow will participate by providing support and/or leadership under the direction of the Regional Health Administrator (RHA) in collaboration with the OASH Region X staff on various projects of public significance and function as a member of the Region X OASH Team.

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • TFCCI: Promoting and supporting the adoption and implementation of tobacco-free policies at universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning across Region X states.
  • Adult Immunizations: Supporting regional efforts related to implementation of the National Adult Immunization Plan (NAIP).
  • LMCTC: Supporting local elected officials in their efforts to address the policy and environmental factors that contribute to childhood obesity; providing technical assistance to support those local elected officials.
  • Participating on other initiatives and program of OASH.
  • Tracking progress and reporting on metrics of initiatives.
  • Attending meetings on key public health issues that have a health promotion, disease prevention focus.
  • Leading prevention activities which may include engaging federal and non-federal stakeholders, managing webinars, planning meetings and events, conducting site visits, assessing technical assistance needs, and presenting prevention activities to others.
  • Participating in regional staff meetings, ORISE Fellows and LMCTC monthly meetings, and other relevant meetings to discuss issues and learn about new prevention activities that are led by the federal government or private sector.
  • Disseminating information through presentations at conferences or meetings and publishing articles at the local, state, and national venues (blogs, newsletters, newspapers, etc.).
  • Engaging with existing OASH Region X teams in Women’s Health, Minority Health, Family Planning, HIV/AIDS, and others.
  • Traveling in the region (AK, ID, OR, WA) and possibly to Washington D.C.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Seattle, Washington, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in public health or related field received within the last five years.
  • Public presentation skills.
