A research fellowship opportunity is currently available in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), in San Francisco, California.

The Office of the Regional Health Administrator supports the priorities and initiatives of the Secretary for Health, Assistant Secretary for Health, and the OASH Program Offices.  ORISE Fellows have a unique opportunity to lead public health activities, develop expertise in a variety of prevention-focused public health issues, and receive professional development from Regional Health Administrators who are senior-level public health officials.  They support cross-cutting HHS and OASH prevention efforts, with a focus on chronic disease prevention and health promotion activities.  These may be overarching initiatives, including the Tobacco Free College Campus Initiative, region and state-specific prevention activities, and the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities.

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

• Developing professional development plans that will include their key activities/projects, training and technical assistance needs, mentoring/coaching opportunities.
• Attending meetings on key public health issues that have a health promotion, disease prevention focus.
• Leading prevention activities which may include engaging federal and non-federal stakeholders, managing webinars, presenting prevention activities to others.
• Participating in regional staff meetings and ORISE monthly meetings to discuss issues and learn about new prevention activities that are led by the federal government or private sector.
• Disseminating information through presentations at conferences or meetings and publishing articles at the local, state, and national venues (blogs, newsletters, newspapers, etc.).
• Traveling in the region (CA, AZ, NV, HI) and possibly to Washington D.C.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the San Francisco, California area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

• A Master’s degree in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) field received within the last five years.
