A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, US Department of Health and Human Services, in Washington, DC.
The fellow will serve as science policy research assistant to the members of the Federal Advisory Committee, the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (the Advisory Council). Main activities will include supporting respective subcommittees and working groups by conducting research on issues and topics related to policies and strategies surrounding antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance from both federal and non-federal entities. Other opportunities will include drafting reports, letters, white papers, and other forms of scientific writing. The fellow will also serve as the main policy research lead to the Chairs of the Advisory Council.
Candidates will be provided instruction/direction by the Advisory Council Designated Federal Officer, Committee Manager, and Advisory Council Chair.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, D.C. area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
Master's or doctoral degree in human or animal health and infectious diseases, biological life sciences, biomedical science/pharmaceuticals, public health, science policy, agricultural science, epidemiology, and/or microbiology earned within the past five years is required. Those currently enrolled in a degree program will also be considered.
An interest in science policy research and writing, and the federal advisory committee process is required.
Experience writing scientific publications, policy reports, and conducting in-depth research using web-based scientific libraries and research methods is required.
Experience with the following is preferred (for human and/or animal issues): surveillance of antibiotic-resistant infections, prevention and/or interruption of the spread of antibiotic-resistant threats, or development of rapid diagnostics and novel treatments.
US citizenship is required and willingness to relocate to Washington, DC, is required.
