The Office of Minority Health Mission is to advance FDA’s regulatory mission in addressing the reduction of racial and ethnic health disparities and in achieving the highest standard of health for all.
Office of Minority Health Goals:
1. Improve and strengthen regulatory science informing the research and evaluation of sub-population data associations with race and ethnicity.
2. To strengthen FDA capacity to address minority health and health disparities across the Agency
3. To promote effective communication and the dissemination of information to the public, particularly undeserved, vulnerable populations (who often experience low health literacy and/or speak English as a second language).
Program Objectives:
The research participant will be provided an overview of FDA’s regulatory review and research activities as well as product quality and safety responsibilities. This opportunity will provide an overall foundation about FDA's public health and regulatory mission including the Office of Minority Health and regional and district staff learning about the scientific and regulatory knowledge needed to support FDA's public health and regulatory mission. The student will learn the foundation of the FDA's mission and authorities to enhance their understanding of our public health and regulatory mission as well as their scientific competencies and technical knowledge.
The research participant may be involved in the following activities:
At the end of the student internship experience, the student will provide an oral and written presentation to the OCQPM and OMH summarizing their work experience and sharing any lessons learn and the effect or influence the internship has in their studies in continuing or pursuit a career in public health.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for 3 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is part-time at FDA in the Atlanta, GA area. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
Applicants must currently be enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate junior, or higher, in public health, or related field. Applicant will also be considered if they have completed their bachelor’s degree within one year of the starting date. Experience with computer applications (SPSS/SAS) and health communication skills are desired.
