Description

The participant will gain knowledge in describing and assessing factors that influence risk from hazards contained in animal feed components and finished animal feed.  The participant will learn:
• about the numerous avoidable and unavoidable hazards found in animal feed;
• methods to review and capture into a database the various processes feed ingredients and mixed feeds go through and the effects manufacturing has on the feeds and the levels of hazards in them;
• how parameters for measuring the exposure and health consequences components that define risk can be established; and
• to develop steps of a model to predict the risk each hazard or groups of similar hazards presents to food-producing animals, to pet animals and to people consuming meat, milk and eggs or those tending to their animals.

Further, the participant will be part of a Team that is applying the results of the model in deciding whether certain feed hazards require 1) more research to more completely understand their risk to animal and human health, 2) enhanced surveillance to identify points where controls can be exercised to reduce exposure to threats to animal and human health, and 3) increased outreach to the animal feed manufacturers and animal producers to ensure they comprehend their roles in ensuring their feed and food products are safe.
