A research opportunity is available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), in the Office of Analytics and Outreach (OAO), Division of Public Health Informatics and Analytics (DPHIA).
Each year there are numerous illness and injury reports associated with products regulated by the FDA. Program offices within FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) are responsible for analysing/reviewing data from multiple sources, both internal and external to FDA, to identify the underlying cause of adverse events. Review of the epidemiologic and scientific literature about health outcomes potentially related to products regulated by FDA is also conducted. Discovery and management of hidden signals using these data sources can identify potential safety concerns and enable predictive and preventive actions to improve the safety of CFSAN regulated products (foods, dietary supplements, cosmetics). Data integration, analytics, and visualization development is paramount for an efficient and holistic approach to identifying and managing latent signals.
This opportunity will allow the participant to learn about:
1). The development of signals management processes for CFSAN regulated product safety
2). How to analyze and understand the relation of adverse health events associated with FDA regulated products by using multiple data sources; and also helping to integrate, analyze, and visualize various data sources through customized development for program office support and early signal detection.
The participant chosen for this opportunity will have hands-on experience identifying data sources applicable to a signals detection process, data analyses and layering/harmonizing of multiple data sources, generating presentations and briefings for a variety of audiences, development of data dashboards, and visual analytics and dashboard development.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for 12 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the College Park, Maryland area. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
Applicants must have received their Master's degree in Epidemiology or Statistics, or closely-related field within five years of the desired starting date. Other desirable skills include SAS programming, Statistical analysis, Visual analytics, Data management, Data mining, Text mining, R, and Python.
