Project description for veterinary ORISE Fellow
The appointed fellow will be mentored in laboratory animal science and medicine and receive hands-on training in proper use of a wide array of research animal species. This will be accomplished by: 
• Assisting with special projects including those involving infectious disease research and ones involving visual processing algorithms of spontaneous behavior of laboratory rodents 
• Identifying specific projects that can lead to an improvement in research quality or to improvement in humane use of laboratory animals, completing at least one or more independent projects, culminating in at least one poster presentation at a scientific conference.  The Fellow will also submit a paper based on research depicted in the poster for publication in a peer-review laboratory animal research journal
• Assisting with and carrying out clinical evaluation of laboratory animals, as well as learning to properly document examination details in the clinical case record.
• Assisting  with and gaining proficiency with animal care and technical procedures for  animal species housed in the animal facility, including techniques such as:
o Handling and restraining animals
o Blood collection and other technical procedures
o Surgical procedures
o Rodent colony management procedures
o Rodent colony biosecurity procedures 
• Assisting with and delivering training to technicians and researchers  in animal care and technical  procedures, as well as in other topics important to the laboratory animal research environment
• Learning about and assisting with procedures and paperwork necessary for rodent imports and exports
• Attending most monthly Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) meetings, and assisting with veterinary review of IACUC protocols, which may include assisting researchers with study analysis and design
• Becoming familiar with laboratory animal facility standards used by regulatory agencies, and accrediting agencies
• Becoming familiar with the occupational health and safety requirements in the laboratory animal facility environment

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA and contingent upon the availability of funds. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the Silver Spring, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

The desired start date for this 12 month program is 10/01/2015. 

The successful candidate should have received a DVM or VMD degree from a USA accredited veterinary school within the past 5 years. In addition, experience in the practice of clinical veterinary medicine for at least 12 months is preferred, but is not mandatory.

Applicants should possess a GPA of 3.0 or above from a US accredited veterinary program.
