DEVCOM ARL, as an integral part of the Army Futures Command, is the Army’s foundational research laboratory focused on operationalizing science to ensure overmatch in any future conflict. What will I be doing?

Under the guidance of a mentor at the Detonation Science and Modeling Branch, Weapons Sciences of DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL), you will have an opportunity to gain knowledge in regular laboratory functions, equipment maintenance and operations, and plasma-based experiments.  You may also be trained to conduct baseline material characterization. This internship will give you an opportunity to research with multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers from ARL and external DoD/university partners to address and solve technical challenges in the field related to mission and customer-funded programs.

What is the anticipated start date? Summer 2023

Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a part-time summer research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the sponsor. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

 About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

 Undergraduate or graduate students majoring in (but not limited to) Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related field. 

  • Be willing to work in a laboratory setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent adaptability to new research team/project assignment per organization needs
  • Must be  able to commute to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

Security Investigation: Applicants should be able to pass a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) security investigation should they be selected and accept the internship offer.
