Click on Apply now to start your application.
The Environmental Laboratory (EL) is one of the seven laboratories of U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (USACE-ERDC), which is the Army Corps of Engineers' integrated research and development (R&D) organization. EL provides solutions to environmental challenges for the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense and the Nation through environmental science and engineering research and development. Researchers in EL conduct research in ecosystem science and technology, environmental resiliency, environmental sensing, ecological modeling and forecasting, risk and decision science, environmentally sustainable material, systems biology, climate change, computational chemistry, environmental chemistry and environmental security.
What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in a number of research projects related to invasive species ecology and management and plant-insect interactions. Research activities include: rearing, release, and monitoring of cold-hardy biological control agents (BCAs), assessing cold tolerance of biological control agents, investigating how climate change will impact established weed management systems, and developing integrated pest management strategies for invasive environmental weeds. Specifically, you will be researching the BCAs Agasicles hygrophila and Amynothrips andersoni for the control of alligatorweed. You will have the opportunity to conduct greenhouse, laboratory, and field experiments to better understand BCAs and invasive species management and present results at academic conferences. You will be part of a team to study invasive species and their management. You will also likely have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists of varying backgrounds and expertise on other biocontrol and weed management programs.
Where will I be located? Vicksburg, Mississippi
Why should I apply?
This fellowship provides the opportunity to independently utilize your skills and engage with experts in innovative ideas to move the proposed research forward.
