Description

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) performs research on ocean, estuarine, riverine, and watershed systems in support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Department of Defense (DOD) Task Force in support of the Ocean Commission. A multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and support personnel work in CHL's internationally known, unique facilities. This team has developed state-of-the-art experimental and computational models for solving water resource problems worldwide. CHL research and development addresses water resource and navigation challenges in a variety of hydrodynamic systems including aquifers, watersheds, rivers, reservoirs, lakes, estuaries, harbors, coastal inlets, and wetlands. Physical facilities of approximately 1.7 million square feet and high-performance computing facilities at the DOD Supercomputing Research Center.

What will I be doing?

You will be mentored on researching trends and causes of morphological change in rivers. This will include both natural and anthropogenic causes, such as wildfires and river training structures.  With guidance from a mentor and in collaboration with established river engineers and researchers, you will conduct background literature reviews and data analyses to support fluvial geomorphology studies. You will also test river morphology tools developed at ERDC and use them to perform uncertainty analyses.

You will learn and gain knowledge in common analytical techniques and tools used in fluvial geomorphology. You will draw on engineering concepts such as system mass balances, data uncertainty, and model sensitivity. You will engage in project team discussions to collaborate with other researchers on findings, give and receive feedback, and place your research in the greater context. You will practice research documentation at all stages to record and communicate the model development and application process.

Why should I apply?

This fellowship provides the opportunity to independently utilize your skills and engage with experts in innovative ideas to move the proposed research forward.

Where will I be located?  Vicksburg, Mississippi

What is the anticipated start date? June 2025
