The Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) is one of the seven laboratories of U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the Army Corps of Engineers' integrated research and development organization. CHL’s multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and support personnel is internationally recognized for its world-class research. The laboratory grew out of the Waterways Experiment Station, established in Vicksburg, MS in 1930. CHL has grown to include more than 150 engineers and scientists, including more than 60 doctorate and master’s degrees. Along with access to unique, cutting-edge facilities, these team members have the experimental and computational expertise needed to solve water resource problems worldwide. CHL addresses an entire spectrum of water resource challenges in groundwater, watersheds, rivers, reservoirs, estuaries, harbors, coastal inlets and wetlands. Our multi-disciplinary team includes members from the ERDC CHL, ERDC Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), and the USACE Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC). Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will participate in literature review and parameterization of snowmelt processes. These parameters may include albedo, sublimation, and wet meltrate. This effort will lead to algorithms for implementation in USACE hydrologic models (e.g., HEC-HMS and GSSHA). The participant will participate in writing one or more journal articles, technical reports, or conference papers documenting their findings.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will gain advanced knowledge and experience working advanced modeling techniques. The projects will allow the participant to continue their research while advancing the capabilities of the USACE, ERDC, the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
Appointment Length
This ORISE appointment is for a full-time twelve month period. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by ERDC-CHL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
The ideal candidates should have, or be pursuing, a Master's degree or Ph.D. in a field related to water resources, such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Hydrology. Candidates are expected to have skills in hydrologic modeling (HEC-HMS, GSSHA, or similar) and data analysis software (e.g, R, Matlab, GIS, or Python). Candidates with experience in hydrologic or related fields are particularly encouraged to apply. Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0.
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
