Description

The participant will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through research and analysis with the Health and Ecological Criteria Division; Office of Science and Technology; Office of Water.  Research and analysis experience will be focused on investigating and evaluating water related environmental challenges and identifying the scientific studies that need to be done address them.  The participant will also have the opportunity to research voluntary environmental program design, marketing, and implementation.  The participant will learn to synthesize and clearly communicate science issues and research findings.  The project will provide excellent exposure to a broad range of water environment science, research, science-based decision making, and networks that will advance the research project and deepen the participant’s essential research and science communication skills.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.  The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and is contingent on the availability of funds.  The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.  The appointment is full-time in the Washington, DC area.  Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a bachelor's or master’s degree in in environmental science (including: aquatic toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental biology, ecological risk assessment, biogeochemistry, etc.), environmental studies, environmental policy, environmental management, environmental engineering, environmental studies, environmental public policy or a related field within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
