A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. The internship will be served with the Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds (OWOW).
The Ocean and Coastal Management Branch in OWOW is the focal point at EPA for leading programs to prevent and mitigate ocean and coastal acidification, regulate pollution from all vessels in freshwater and marine waters, protect coral reefs and their habitats, prevent land-based sources of marine litter from entering waterways, meet the goal of “no net loss” of coastal wetlands, and help coastal communities adapt to a changing climate. Our programs are responsible for the development of polices, guidance, and regulations, and for the implementation of programs to protect ocean and coastal resources.
The participant will be involved in a range of research activities related to maintaining the health, resilience, and sustainability of the oceans and coasts. Research efforts could involve interaction with representatives of federal, state, and local agencies; members of the academic community; representatives of non-governmental organizations; and members of the private sector.
This project will provide an opportunity for the participant to learn about the role of international, federal, state and local governments in ocean and coastal management, and about the interaction between the various levels of government and the private sector on these issues. The participant will be providing a unique opportunity to learn how programs evolve from conceptual to implantation phases.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. For additional information about this program, please visit https://orise.orau.gov/epa/.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will range from $56,233 up to $81,548, depending on degree level and prior experience. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
The mentor for this project will be Terri Johnson (Johnson.Terri@epa.gov). The desired start date is June 28, 2018.
Applicants must have received a master's or doctoral degree in engineering, biology, physical science, biological science, environmental science, or a closely related field within five years of the start date, or have completed all degree requirements prior to the start date. A focus on coral reef ecosystems, vessel discharges, or other ocean and coastal issues is desirable.
