A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. The internship will be served with the Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds (OWOW).
The participant will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through analysis and research with OWOW’s Nonpoint Source Management Branch of the Watershed Restoration, Assessment and Protection Division. The research and analysis will focus on the successful use of Clean Water Act Section 319 nonpoint source funding for achieving water quality improvements, as well as researching state Nonpoint Source Management Plans.
The participant may enhance his/her educational background by being trained to
- Evaluate water quality results in proposed nonpoint success stories prior to publication;
- Evaluate the implementation of best management practices and water quality monitoring for controlling nonpoint source pollution.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will start at $56,233. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
The mentor for this project will be Cynthia Curtis (Curtis.cynthia@epa.gov). The desired start date is May 14, 2018.
Applicants should have received a master’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, soil science or natural resource management or a closely related field within five years of the starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Experience with GIS is desirable.
