The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate opening for a full-time GIS Environmental Analyst position at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

What the EPA project is about

The Watershed Exposure Branch (WEB) in Computational Exposure Division (CED) of the National Environmental Research Laboratory (NERL) supports the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by conducting process, modeling, and field research to assess the exposure risks of humans and ecosystems to natural and manmade stressors.  WEB is also responsible for developing innovative software tools for evaluating water quantity and quality.  As part of this effort, the WEB is conducting a research project focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art component-based watershed modeling system which can be used to compose workflows to assess water quantity and quality as they relate to exposure.

What you will be doing

As a team member, you work with a WEB mentor as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for collection and analysis of environmental data leading to the development of microbial exposure assessment in several geographical areas.  The anticipated focus for this work includes development and documentation of microbial exposure maps. This work will be covered under an existing Quality Assurance Project Plan entitled “Source Characterization of Harmful Bacteria in Urban Areas Along Gulf of Mexico,” number D-CED-0031794-QP-1-0.

Required skills for research duties

  • Demonstrated education and/or experience in one of following GIS software: ArcGIS, QGIS, or Leaflet.
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.

How you will apply your skills

  • Gathering and interpreting data on urban landscape features.
  • Performing operations on relevant geospatial datasets.
  • Developing and implementing algorithms for inverse distance weighting and the creation of heat maps that describe potential microbial exposure.
  • Documenting research activities and results in a final project report.

Location: This job will be located at EPA’s facility in Athens, GA.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $20.95 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Expected start date: The position is full and expected to begin July 2019.  The selected applicant will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial contract period is through May 14, 2020, with potential optional periods to follow.

Working conditions: This position will involve work in an administrative setting and is not expected to involve exposure to hazardous elements.

Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a closely related field of study in the last 24 months, and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
