A research training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This project is with OTAQ’s Assessment and Standards Division (ASD) in the Health Effects, Benefits, and Toxics Center (HEBTC). HEBTC is responsible for assessment of the human health impacts of emissions from a broad range of vehicles, engines, and their fuels. These assessments include evaluation of criteria pollutants as well as mobile source air toxics. This project will include updating the information underlying these assessments. . 

The participant will be involved in conducting a comprehensive literature evaluation and summary to evaluate impacts that arise due to human exposure to a broad range of mobile source emissions including exhaust emissions, and brake and tire wear. The participant will summarize his/her research regarding the range of health endpoints and sensitive populations identified in this literature evaluation. The participant may have opportunities to present his/her research within EPA and possibly at professional meetings.

The project will provide participants with experience in:

• Applying systematic literature review principals
• Applying of analytical and statistical methods
• Writing documents for audiences of different technical backgrounds
• Understanding the application of these assessments in a regulatory context

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Appointments are full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.

Applicants must have received a master's degree in toxicology or public health within the past five years or be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university pursuing a doctoral degree in toxicology or public health. Proof of enrollment will be required each semester.
