Description

The research participant will learn about water governance research on social-ecological systems. The research participant will learn about ongoing EPA research of the legal, policy and governance aspects of harmful algal blooms. The research participant will have the opportunity to interact with federal employees, contractors and other post-docs pursuing research that protects human health and the environment. The research participant will be a member of an EPA research team that conducts a broad range of activities, and will be involved in a variety of challenging and rewarding projects and tasks, such as:

  • Reviewing literature related to harmful algal blooms, water governance and social-ecological systems.
  • Writing, reviewing, and editing journal articles and scientific reports.
  • Presenting research at regional or national conferences.
  • Being an active member of a research team, and participating in relevant meetings and communications between researchers and stakeholders.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and is contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The mentor for this project is Ahjond Garmestani (garmestani.ahjond@epa.gov). The anticipated start date for the appointment is January 2, 2019.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD within five years of the desired starting date. The degree should be in geography, social science, ecology or a related field. The candidate should have taken courses or be familiar with governance, policy, and law.
