A postdoctoral research training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL). This appointment will be served with the Exposure Methods and Measurements Division (EMMD) in Research Triangle Park, NC.

This research opportunity will apply social sciences to human exposure science to improve methods, measurements and models for evaluating the relationship between human behaviors/activities, exposure to stressors, the natural environment, and human wellbeing.

The research participant will gain experience by:

• Reviewing literature and state-of-the-science as relates to evaluating the influence of the natural environment on human wellbeing.
• Developing, testing, and applying survey instruments to evaluate wellbeing and how it is influenced by the natural environment.
• Developing research strategies for evaluating knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs for how individual choices influence environmental health and protection at individual, community, regional, and global scales.
• Collaborating on and contributing to human exposure studies that will benefit from behavioral science capability and expertise.
• Preparing presentations and journal articles to communicate research findings
• Researching methods, measurement, and modelsin exposure science

The research participant will develop capability and expertise in social science as applied to exposure science.  Although there are no formal training programs in this field, there is growing recognition of its value and importance.  Accordingly, the research experience gained through this position will provide a unique track record, capability, and expertise to compete for permanent positions within and outside of EPA. 

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.

Applicants must have received a doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, public health, decision sciences, environmental science, natural resources, environmental health, or health behavior within five years of the desired starting date or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.

The appointment is full time for 12 months and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
