EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling (CEMM), Watershed and Ecosystem Characterization Division (WECD) located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
Safe and Sustainable Water Resources (SSWR) Research Program is one of the EPA ORD’s national research programs. One of the important research areas under the SSWR is “Nutrients and Harmful Algal Blooms”. While EPA has made great efforts toward reducing nutrient pollution nationwide, we continue to be challenged to consider the appropriate spatial and temporal context for reductions and alternative practices for tracking interventions to meet nutrient reduction goals in a comprehensive manner.
Research Project: This research opportunity, Integrated Environmental Modeling, is comprised of two broad components: 1) Develop and application of state of the science for nutrient study, and 2) seek and evaluate effectiveness of various mitigation practices for water quality improvement.
Learning Objectives: The research participant will have the opportunity to learn model development and application to better understand nutrient source, fate and transport in the large river basins, as well as seeking the most effective alternative practices for minimizing the environmental impacts of different anthropogenic activities (e.g. land use/land management practices) leading to the sustainability of surface and subsurface water resources.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed up to four additional years upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

EPA Security Clearance: Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Experience with geographic information systems and hydrological and water quality modeling is desirable.
