A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) in Washington, DC.
The participant will learn how to use, improve, and further develop EJSCREEN, EPA's environmental justice screening and mapping tool. As part of the project the participant will be exposed to EPA methodologies and guided on how to use the various aspects of mapping, policy, environmental justice, and web technology to assess how to more effectively use the EJSCREEN. The participant will learn about federal government processes, how to conduct outreach projects, and how to apply collaborative problem solving methods within a team environment. With an emphasis on environmental justice, upon completion of the project the participant will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how the EPA ensures that its programs meet the needs of low-income, minority, and tribal populations.
- Under the guidance of an Office of Environmental Justice team mentor, the participant may be involved in one or more of the following team activities:
- Participate in training to properly use EPA's EJSCREEN mapping tool and examine the environmental and demographic data in communities across the country.
- Learn how to use EJSCREEN data to create presentations and develop reports that convey information on EPA’s environmental justice efforts and the efforts of community and governmental partners.
- Conduct research that aids EPA in identifying issues in communities with potential environmental justice concerns using EJSCREEN environmental and demographic datasets.
- Learn how to evaluate current uses of EJSCREEN and develop case studies that share information about potential uses with EPA and the public.
- Learn how to identify training challenges and how to develop training materials that communicate potential EJSCREEN uses for EPA and the public.
- Participate in meetings associated with agency-wide management and implementation of EJSCREEN.
