EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), Existing Chemicals Risk Assessment Division (ECRAD), located in Washington, DC.
Research Project: This research participant will have the opportunity to create or study models used to estimate the partitioning and transformation of chemicals in the environment, including endpoints such as accumulation in wastewater biosolids, removal in wastewater treatment, fugacity, transformation rates, and degradation products. Models developed and adapted by the research participant will be used to inform environmental fate assessments under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
Learning Objectives: Through the course of this research project, and under the guidance of a mentor, the research participant will have the opportunity to learn about environmental fate processes, models to estimate fate information when measured values are not available, and chemical assessments under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This research will be closely coordinated with the OPPT fate technical team, other EPA scientists, and outside experts to provide additional training opportunities and experience in chemical risk evaluation.

Appointment Length: The appointment initially may be for one year and may be renewed upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. The current stipend amounts for this opportunity are $61,00 per year for master's level candidates and $74,000 per year for doctoral level candidates. EPA Security Clearance: Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
- • Knowledge of environmental chemistry
• Experience with models such as linear free energy relationships (LFER) or quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR)
• Experience with data processing, statistical analysis, and preparation of tables and graphics for presentations and publications
• Education or experience with chemical risk assessment
• Literature reviews and reference management
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
• Strong written and oral communication skills and experience such as writing reports, preparing briefings, and giving presentations
