The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a part time Materials Management Research position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Cincinnati, Ohio (Center Hill Location).
The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.
What the EPA project is about
The Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) plans, coordinates and conducts an applied, customer-driven, national research and development program to improve decision making by EPA, federal, state, tribal and local agencies, when faced with challenging environmental problems in the built environment. Within CESER, the Homeland Security and Materials Management Division (HSMMD) conducts an applied, customer-driven, national-scale research program to improve the nation’s preparedness for and response to environmental emergencies and materials management challenges.
HSMMD has been charged with conducting research in the area of solid waste treatment and disposal. including the examination of landfills, anaerobic digesters, compost facilities, and other innovative technologies. EPA conducts research on the wastes that are accepted by these facilities and the different liquid and gaseous emissions that are generated from the facilities. EPA performs this research in the laboratory with direct measurements and in the office, developing models.
What experience and skills will you gain?
As a team member, you will assist the solid waste research team with data collection/entry, laboratory analysis and experimental upkeep.
Management and Administrative responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with solid waste research experiments in a laboratory setting
- Assisting with laboratory analyses of liquid and gas samples for contaminants of concern
- Recording laboratory data into appropriate EPA Laboratory Notebooks
- Digitizing information and data from scanned documents into databases
- Follow appropriate EPA quality assurance and qualtiy control protocols
- Assisting in the collection of site-specific data from state agencies
- Undergo and maintain laboratory health and safety training per EPA Safety, Health, and Environmental Management programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
- General laboratory experience (college-level laboratory coursework experience acceptable);
- Legible handwriting;
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat;
- Proficient with Microsoft Office application Excel;
- Experience in administration support functions (recordkeeping, filing, etc) and managing records (electronic and hardcopy) or databases;
- Strong proofreading and editing skills; and
- Strong written, oral, and electronic communication skills.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
- Experience with R or R Studio.
Location: This job will be located EPA’s facility in Cincinnati, OH. Center Hill Facility - 5995 Center Hill Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45224.
Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $20.60 for hours worked.
Hours: Part-time. Up to 20 hours per week.
Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Expected start date: The position is part-time and expected to begin in October 2024. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA.

- Be at least 18 years of age and
- Have completed at least two or more years of college-level education in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) major from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
- Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
