Description

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Watershed Hydrology Technical Support position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

The Landscape and Aquatic Systems Modeling Branch (LASMB) in Ecosystems Processes Division (EPD) of the Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling (CEMM) supports the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by conducting process, modeling, and field research to assess the exposure risks of humans and ecosystems to natural and man-made stressors.  LASMB is also responsible for developing innovative software tools for evaluating water quantity and quality.  As part of this effort, the LASMB is conducting a research project (https://qed.epa.gov/hms/ ) focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art component-based watershed modeling system which can be used to compose workflows to assess water quantity and quality as they relate to exposure.

What experience and skills will you gain?

As a team member, you will work with a LASMB mentor as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for development of LASMB’s watershed modeling components.  The anticipated focus for this work includes development, testing, and documenting of science algorithms and software as part of the component/service based watershed hydrology within the context of water quantity and water quality.  Activities shall include assisting with the following:

  • Researching literature and databases related to watershed modeling;

  • Developing and documenting algorithms for modeling physical processes in watershed modeling;

  • Developing, testing, and documenting software in watershed modeling domain; and

  • Preparing manuscripts, reports, presentations, and user guides/manuals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

  • Education and/or experience in hydrology or watershed modeling;

  • Experience with writing project reports, scientific manuscripts/papers, user manuals, or theses; and

  • Education or experience with at least one high level programming language such as Python, JAVA, C#, JavaScript.

Location:  This job will be located EPA’s facility in Athens, GA.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $29.27 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin October 2021. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial project is through May 14, 2022, with up to 3 additional option periods.

Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age and

  • Have earned at least a Master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a closely related field of study from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.

 

EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
