The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Software Developer position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.
The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.
What the EPA project is about
The Environmental Processes Division (EPD) in Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling (CEMM) supports the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by measuring and modeling contaminants in the environment including research to provide fundamental methods and models needed to implement environmental statutes. The Landscape and Aquatic System Modeling Branch (LASMB) within EPD is responsible for developing innovative software tools for evaluating water quantity and quality. As part of this effort, the LASMB is conducting a research project focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art component-based watershed modeling system which can be used to compose workflows to assess water quantity and quality as they relate to exposure.
What experience and skills will you gain?
As a team member, you will work with a LASMB mentor as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for development of LASMB’s watershed modeling components. The anticipated focus for this work includes development, testing, deployment, and documenting of desktop and web software as part of the component/service-based watershed hydrology within the context of water quantity and water quality.
How you will apply your skills
Software development responsibilities:
- Assisting, developing, testing, documenting, and deploying desktop software;
- Assisting, developing, testing, documenting, and deploying RESTful web services;
- Assisting, developing, testing, documenting, and deploying web graphical user interfaces; and
- Assisting, developing, testing, documenting, and deploying watershed modeling workflows composed with web services and graphical user interfaces including maps.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
- Demonstrated education and/or experience in desktop and web-based software development in at least two of the following computer languages: Python, C#, JavaScript, Angular;
- Experience working in a team environment;
- A working knowledge of relational databases; and
- Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.
Location: This job will be located EPA’s facility in Athens, GA.
Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $21.37 for hours worked.
Hours: Full-time
Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin August 2020. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial project is through May 14, 2021, with up to 4 additional potential optional periods.

- Have earned at least a Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field of study from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
- Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
