The Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) is a unique organization within the Department of War (DoW) consisting of teams of researchers embedded at the point of care within multiple Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, the research efforts undertaken focus on the mitigation, treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on translating their findings into clinical practice to improve the care of injured Service members and Veterans. EACE is seeking a faculty fellow to support our mission of mitigating the effects of extremity trauma and amputation. As the selected Fellow, you will engage in evaluating current scientific evidence to advance clinical care and inform the development of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for patients with extremity trauma and amputations.
What will I be doing and Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a designated mentor, you will learn and gain experience in comprehensive systematic and scoping reviews. Your research and analysis will focus on evidence-based medicine initiatives and help shape clinical pathways, rehabilitation protocols, and holistic care strategies for the amputee patient population.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience and engage in the following activities:
- Drafting and registering systematic review protocols (e.g., PROSPERO) outlining search strategies, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and analytical plans.
- Designing and executing robust search strategies across multiple scientific databases (e.g., PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library).
- Conducting title/abstract and full-text screening using established software platforms, and extract relevant clinical data from selected studies.
- Assessing the risk of bias and methodological quality of included studies using standardized appraisal tools (e.g., Cochrane RoB, GRADE, MINORS).
- Applying qualitative and, where appropriate, quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis) of clinical outcomes related to amputation surgery, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and patient quality of life.
- Preparing technical reports, clinical practice guideline recommendations, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals

About EACE
The DoD and VA Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) consists of teams embedded at the point of care within multiple world renown Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In-line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, our clinical team focuses on development of clinical outcomes assessment, clinical practice guidelines, and treatment protocols. We are developing a novel system for extremity trauma outcome measures tracking. We focus on traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on tracking outcomes for clinical assessment to improve the care of injured Service members and Veterans.
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoW. Participants do not enter into an employee/ employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoW or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. - Experience in conducting systematic reviews or meta-analyses.
- Familiarity with clinical practice guideline development processes and evidence-grading frameworks (e.g., GRADE).
- Experience with systematic review software (e.g., Covidence, Rayyan) and statistical analysis tools.
- Strong foundational knowledge of clinical terminology, particularly related to orthopedics, trauma, physical medicine, and rehabilitation.
- Excellent scientific writing and communication skills, with a track record of peer-reviewed publications or academic presentations.
