The Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) is the leading advocate for research and treatment of Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients with extremity trauma and amputation. The EACE leads efforts to enhance collaboration between the DoD and the VA extremity trauma and amputation care providers and conduct scientific research to minimize the effects of traumatic injuries and improve clinical outcomes (https://www.health.mil/About-MHS/OASDHA/HSPO/EACE). This research fellowship will be housed at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI), Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio Military Medical Center, San Antonio, TX.
The EACE Rehabilitation Research Participant will engage with the Senior Scientist for the CFI Military Performance Laboratory; a laboratory which conducts translational research to enable readiness and return Service Members to high function after extremity trauma (e.g. amputation and complex limb salvage). The EACE Rehabilitation Research Participant will assist the Senior Scientist to define clinical outcomes of data that demonstrate long term outcomes after patients with amputation or limb salvage. Under the guidance of a mentor, the candidate will support the clinical staff at the CFI to ensure consistent collection of appropriate outcome measures throughout a person’s rehabilitation, determine how to best collect and database these outcome measures for research, and mine the electronic health records to investigate the changes in clinical outcome measures over time with an emphasis on those that have undergone amputation and complex limb salvage.
The participant will have the opportunity to engage with cutting edge equipment and technology at various laboratories throughout their opportunity. The Military Performance Lab consists of the Gait and Motion Analysis Lab and the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN). The Gait and Motion Analysis Lab includes a 30-camera motion capture system (Motion Analysis Corp.) 8 force platforms embedded in tandem in a level ground walkway (AMTI, Inc.), an instrumented treadmill (Treadmetrix) with adjustable inclinations for inclined and declined locomotion, an instrumented 16-step staircase that can be converted into an adjustable inclining walkway (AMTI, Inc.), two terrain pits with either gravel or uneven grass terrains, and a 16-channel electromyography system (Motion Lab Systems, Inc.). Analysis software include Matlab, Visual3D, Microsoft Office, and SPSS statistical analysis software. All of these systems are integrated and synchronized to capture kinematic and kinetic data. The Gait and Motion Analysis Lab also has two digital video cameras (Panasonic) a K4b2 metabolic mobile testing system (Cosmed, Ltd.) and a TrueOne 240 metabolic testing system (ParvoMedics). The unique combination of an 18-meter level walkway, full flight of instrumented stairs, and an instrumented inclined walkway, enhances the ability to test patients while they are performing activities consistent with their high level of function.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by EACE. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in the fields of rehabilitation, collection of clinical outcome measures, clinical rehabilitation background or related fields is ideal. Proficiency databasing research data, IRB protocol design (or equivalent) is preferred. Specific research background in the area of extremity trauma is highly desired. A track record of publication and excellent technical writing skills are preferred.
Education/Training: PhD from an accredited institution in rehabilitation, or a related field.
Experience: 1-2 years of experience working with clinically relevant outcome measures used in rehabilitation research is preferred
Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
Research Environment: The research environment is that of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation center in a DoD research hospital.
