The DOE Scholars Program is designed to provide connections for research, technical and professional opportunities within U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and organizations that support the DOE mission. The Office of State and Community Energy Program (SCEP) works with state and local organizations to significantly accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies, catalyze local economic development and create jobs, reduce energy costs, and avoid pollution through place-based strategies involving a wide range of government, community, business and other stakeholders. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will be involved in the following activities:

• Extensive research related to state, local, and Tribal governments utilization of SCEP funds;
• Drafting documents and reports related to possible campaigns to support Justice40 work in SCEP grantee locales and other areas;
• Helping support the development of new partnerships with affinity organizations and entities associated with SCEP grantees or potential grantees to further SCEP/DOE mission;
• Other duties as assigned.

Benefits

• Stipends start at $750/week for graduate students and recent graduates.
• Inbound/Outbound Travel: Up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.
• Other allowances: Depending on your project assignment, duration of appointment and funding availability, you may be eligible to receive an allowance for travel and training to promote the educational goals of your appointment.

Duration

Initial appointment will be full-time (40 hours per week) and six months in length.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

• Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
• Be 18 years of age or older by desired start date.
• Must be pursuing a Master's degree or have completed a Master's degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or a field that supports the DOE operations mission including but not limited to communications, management, business and law.

The ideal candidate will have relevant knowledge, experience and skills to include:

• Strong Oral and Written Communications skills
• Congressional Affairs
• Knowledge of the Federal Appropriations process
• Stakeholder engagement

• Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your scientific capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect.
