Description

The U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) is seeking Scholars to engage in projects and activities related BETO's mission. BETO "supports research, development, and demonstration to enable the sustainable use of domestic biomass and waste resources for the production of biofuels and bioproducts." 

Bioenergy Technologies include:

  • Advanced Algal Systems
  • Bioproduct Production
  • CO2 Utilization
  • Conversion Technologies
  • Data, Modeling, & Analysis
  • Feedstock Technologies
  • Systems Development & Integration
  • Transportation Biofuels
  • Waste-to-Energy

Stipends

The DOE Scholars Program provides stipends starting at $700 per week for undergraduate students and $750/week for graduate students.

Location

Appointments will be served at Washington, DC.  Remote participation may be possible.

Travel

Travel reimbursement of inbound and outbound costs up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned internship location.

Length of Appointment

Appointments duration typically ranges from 8-12 weeks, but other appointments periods may be possible.

A complete application consists of:

  • Essay Questions (goals, experiences, and skills relevant to the DOE Scholars Program)
  • Resume (PDF)
  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcripts/Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in progress coursework and grades through summer 2022. First-year undergraduate students must include completed/in progress coursework through Fall 2022. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.
  • Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your professional capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect.

All documents must be submitted via Zintellect. All application components must be received in the system in order to be considered.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

This opportunity is open to graduate students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
  • Be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Be pursuing or have a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or a field that supports the BETO operations mission including but not limited to communications, management, business and law. 

Applicants should be prepared for deep immersion into the project and must be comfortable completing tasks independently.
