How to Apply

A complete application consists of:

  • Profile Information
  • Educational and Employment History
  • Essay Questions (goals, experiences, and skills relevant to the DOE Scholars Program)
  • Resume (PDF)
  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcripts/Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in progress coursework and grades through summer 2018. Transcripts/Academic Records must show the equivalent of at least one year of full-time postsecondary school attendance prior to Fall 2018.  First-year undergraduate students must include completed/in progress coursework through Fall 2018 . First-year graduate students must submit their undergraduate transcript, including the last two years of courses, degree, and date degree was awarded.  Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.

All documents must be submitted via Zintellect. All application components must be received in the system in order to be considered.

The DOE Scholars Program is designed to attract talented undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates to opportunities that are carefully designed to help prepare and motivate participants toward the full range of entry and mid-level research, technical and professional positions within U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and organizations that support the DOE mission.  With a mission focused on discovering solutions to power and to secure America’s future, DOE is committed to:

As a participant in the DOE Scholars Program you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career with DOE and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings within the DOE complex. Opportunities are available for a variety of disciplines at participating DOE facilities nationwide. 

DOE Scholars selected by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) are given a Veteran's Preference. Selected veterans will be placed at various federal agencies in Washington, D.C.

Stipends 

The DOE Scholars program provides stipends to Fellows based on the following scale:

  • Undergraduate student - minimum of $600 per week
  • Graduate and post-graduate student - minimum of $650 per week

Travel

Travel reimbursement of inbound and outbound costs up to $1,000 for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.

Duration

Appointments offered during the summer months are approximately 10-weeks in length. Extensions may be granted based on the needs of the sponsoring office and the candidate's availability. Appointments during the academic year may also be available.

Qualifications

The DOE Scholars Program is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
  • Be 18 years of age or older by the application deadline.
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
    • Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institute of higher education.
    • Have completed an undergraduate (B.A., B.S. or equivalent) or graduate (M.S., DVM, Ph.D., MD or equivalent) degree within five years of the application deadline.
    • Be a U.S. military Veteran who has been honorably discharged and/or who has been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability and who received a college degree in an appropriate discipline within ten years of the desired start date.
    • Have completed a qualifying certificate program within one year of the desired start date are also eligible for a postgraduate appointment. The qualifying certificate program must be offered by an accredited academic institution; must require a minimum of 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent; must be in an appropriate science, technology, engineering, or math discipline; and should be related to or complement a prior degree earned (bachelor’s degree or higher)
  • Must be pursuing a degree or have a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or have interest or experience in a STEM field that supports the DOE mission.
