The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Research Participation Program is designed to provide opportunities for students, postgraduates, established scientists and faculty to participate in programs, projects, and activities that support the mission of the EERE. Participants will hold appointments at DOE-EERE Headquarters, EERE field offices, and other EERE-approved sites. Participants will receive hands-on experience that provides them with an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of EERE.
The Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) is seeking research fellows to participate in the design, execution, and management of its environmental research, STEM, workforce development, and community engagement and outreach portfolio. Fellows will get exposure to projects that support DOE’s mission to increase the wind energy workforce through STEM outreach and education, as well as research efforts to explore the potential environmental and community impacts of land-based and offshore wind energy development. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about design, development, and implementation of programmatic research priorities, managing research projects and research procurement efforts, and developing future R&D and policy analysis efforts.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) endeavors to accelerate the research, development, demonstration, and deployment of technologies and solutions to equitably transition America to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy-wide by no later than 2050, and ensure the clean energy economy benefits all Americans, creating good paying jobs for the American people—especially workers and communities impacted by the energy transition and those historically underserved by the energy system and overburdened by pollution.
EERE's Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) supports a portfolio of research and innovation designed to accelerate the advancement and deployment of offshore, land-based, and distributed wind energy technologies and their integration with the electric grid. WETO’s priorities focus on key opportunities to improve wind turbine performance and reliability, reduce costs, discover solutions to environmental and siting challenges, engage with place-based interested parties, and facilitate market adoption. These priorities reflect a broad range of stakeholder inputs and are supportive of the Biden Administration’s energy and climate goals, namely, to achieve 100 percent carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and put the United States on an irreversible path to a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. Additionally, WETO’s portfolio emphasizes the underpinning principles of equity and environmental justice, the creation of good-paying jobs in a diversified U.S. wind workforce, inclusiveness in STEM skills development, and increased engagement with states, local communities and universities, including HBCUs and minority serving institutions.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by EERE. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. EERE may authorize a stipend increase to offset the costs of health insurance. Participants are eligible to purchase the family or individual health insurance plan offered through ORISE. A relocation allowance may be provided for participants relocating to the hosting facility. Participants may receive an allowance for education and/or scientific activities as approved by EERE.
This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), or foreign nationals.
Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
