To boost Alaska’s contribution in technology and innovation advancements in manufacturing, the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) has launched the DOE Alaskan Summer Internship Program.
This program will provide opportunities for students and recent graduates with strong ties to Alaska to collaborate with researchers at the following national laboratories: Idaho National Laboratory, AMES National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Successful applicants will be paired with a mentor from one of these laboratories to participate in a project of interest to the laboratory and AMO.
Applications will be reviewed by mentors at the hosting national laboratories. Laboratories will select candidates based on the qualifications of the applicants and the needs of the laboratory. Selections made by the hosting laboratories and the project assignments will be forwarded to AMO for final selection.
The Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) within the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is dedicated to improving energy and material efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness of manufacturers across the industrial sector. AMO brings together manufacturers, not-for-profit entities, research organizations, and institutions of higher education to identify challenges; catalyze innovations; and develop cutting edge material, process, and information technologies needed for an efficient and competitive domestic manufacturing sector.

Participant Benefits
Stipends start at $600 per week depending on academic status. May be eligible to receive $150 per week housing allowance. Up to $1,000 to support travel to and from the appointment site for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way from the assigned site.
Duration
Appointments are offered for 10 weeks beginning in Summer 2019.
Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Meet one of the following conditions:
Be enrolled as an undergraduate junior or senior, or master’s student during Sprint 2019 pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or in a discipline that supports the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) mission.
Have earned an undergraduate or master’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or in a discipline that supports the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) mission.
Have strong ties to Alaska. Applicants to this program must indicate their strong ties to Alaska. This may include but is not limited to: birth in Alaska, resident of Alaska, heritage from Alaska, and/or attendance at an Alaskan university or other institution of higher learning. Applicants may also demonstrate their strong ties to Alaska in the application essay questions related to career and professional goals, and experience.
Preferred skills:
Strong computer, computational and analytical skills
Problem solving and communication skills.
Knowledge in domains related to the mission of AMO.
