Description

The Department of Defense (DOD) Office of the Under Secretary for Research & Engineering (USRE) is now accepting applications for their HBCU-MI Summer Faculty Research Fellowship.  This program aims to strengthen the collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense and STEM faculty affiliated with Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) and Minority Institutions (MI). Selected Faculty Fellows will participate in research relevant to the mission of DEVCOM’s Army Research Laboratory (ARL), the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), or the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). Other DoD laboratories may be accessible as research interests from the candidates are evaluated.  More information on each laboratory can be found at www.orau.org/usre. 

Participation requires a commitment of ten consecutive weeks between May 1 and September 1, 2023

Selected Summer Faculty Research Fellows will be paid a $25,000 stipend to participate in 10-weeks of research over Summer 2023.  Selected fellows also receive a $3,000 allowance to cover costs incurred for research materials, supplies, or travel.

To be eligible for this opportunity applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States; dual citizens and foreign nationals are not eligible.
  • Be a current HBCU/MI STEM Faculty member.
  • Have not have collaborated with a DoD Lab within the past five years.

The Research Info Paper is a 2-4 page document describing your research capabilities and how those capabilities and your research interest can impact the DOD research mission. Please follow the template below for format and required content of the info paper.

  • Research Capabilities. Concisely explain your research capabilities – Describe the research you have conducted and the techniques you are familiar with. 
  • Interest. Concisely explain your interest – what specific DOD area of research you would like to explore. Explain how your expertise can impact the desired research area.
  • Outcome. State the expected/desired outcome(s) of the 10 week experience.
  • Follow-on Engagement. Include how the research can be continued at your home institution for continued collaboration with the DoD.
