A complete application package consists of:

An application

Two references: Student enters reference information in Zintellect and selects references as part of the application process. The faculty team member cannot serve as a reference.

Official Academic Transcripts: Transcripts must include Spring 2014 grades. If Summer courses were taken, transcripts must include these grades. Transcripts must show in progress courses for Fall 2014. An official transcript is defined as a transcript issued by the Registrar’s Office that includes all of the following:

  • Official university markings such as the registrar’s signature, university logo or stamp, letterhead or watermark, etc.;
  • Name of the academic institution;
  • Name of the student;
  • For current students, the official transcript must include recent coursework and grades. For postgraduate candidates, the official transcript should include the graduation date and degree awarded.

Student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institution systems will not be accepted.

Description

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate Office of University Programs is offering the DHS Summer Research Team Program for Federal Service Academies to provide faculty and student research teams opportunities to conduct research at the university-based DHS University Centers of Excellence (DHS Centers), or participate in field studies sponsored by DHS S&T and DHS component agencies. The research will be in areas of interest common to both DHS and the Department of Defense (DOD).

The research experience will be held for 4-6 weeks during the summer of 2015.  DHS S&T will provide funding for travel expenses including lodging and per diem expenses up to $5,000 per participant, for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned DHS Center or field study site.

Faculty from all science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines are encouraged to apply, including faculty in agricultural sciences, biological/life sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.

Qualifications

The program requires teams to be composed of one faculty member and an undergraduate student. Awards will not be made to teams with no student member(s) or to teams without a faculty member.

Eligibility Information for All Team Members:

  • Be a student or faculty member from one of the following Federal Service Academies at the time of application:
    • United States Military Academy - West Point, New York
    • United States Naval Academy - Annapolis, Maryland
    • United States Coast Guard Academy - New London, Connecticut
    • United States Merchant Marine Academy - Kings Point, New York
    • United States Air Force Academy - Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Have United States (U.S) citizenship by the application deadline. Evidence of U.S. citizenship (such as a photocopy of a U.S. passport, birth certificate, Certificate of U.S. Naturalization, or Certificate of U.S. Citizenship) must be submitted to ORISE at the time the award is accepted.
  • Be available to participate in the program for 4-6 consecutive weeks, full-time on-site at the DHS Center or field research site during the same period as the rest of the team members.
  • Have coverage under a health insurance plan before arriving at the appointment site and maintenance of coverage during the appointment.

Students must be selected by a faculty team member in order to participate in the program.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
  • Degree: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum Overall GPA: 3.30
