The US Air Force and Defense Health Agency is offering  a post-doctoral fellow in cutting edge research to advance the field of robotic surgery training and credentialing.
 
What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to  participate closely across partnering institutions to execute and complete tasks related to the funded project that aims to validate a variety of simulation-based elements of robotic surgery training curricula and develop benchmarks for proficiency in commonly performed robotic general surgery procedures, ultimately in order to elucidate the learning curve in robotic surgery.

  • Coordinating database of study results, statistical analyses, and video storage.
  • Participation in the coordination and completion of ongoing studies.
  • Engage in bi-weekly lab meeting with PI, Capt Robert Laverty, MD be it virtual or in person.
  • Become intimately familiar with the robotic surgery education literature in order to contribute constructively to study design of ongoing and new projects.
  • Assist with writing/preparing necessary monthly, quarterly, and annual/final project reports and documents, manuscripts and/or presentations.
  • Assist with identifying and completing necessary purchasing requests for review and submission by the PI.
  • Engage in ongoing outreach and recruitment efforts for study participation.
  • Develop and/or assist with IRB protocols, participant enrollment, amendments, annual reviews, audits.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by DHA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About DHA

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) is a joint, integrated Combat Support Agency that enables the Army, Navy, and Air Force medical services to provide a medically ready force and ready medical force to Combatant Commands in both peacetime and wartime. The DHA supports the delivery of integrated, affordable, and high quality health services to Military Health System (MHS) beneficiaries and is responsible for driving greater integration of clinical and business processes across the MHS.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements:

  • A PhD in Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related discipline.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Have demonstrated professional competence and success in the form of peer-reviewed publications and presentations
  • Display knowledge and competency in surgical education research
  • Familiarity with software and statistical experience such as SPSS
  • Have excellent independence and communication skills
  • Prior experience with developing and defending IRB protocols, annual reviews, amendments, is a plus.
