The Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Defense Health Agency (DHA) is offering a post-bachelor's summer research opportunity at the Brooke Army Medical Center located in Fort Sam Houston, TX.
 
What will I be doing?
 
You will support a DHA-funded research study in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Brooke Army Medical Center.  The project is seeking to optimize access to care for military beneficiaries within the San Antonio Military Healthcare System (SAMHS).  We will implement a novel system for helping patients obtain appointments in a timely fashion for acute medical issues.

  • Learn from military and civilian researchers and clinicians
  • Take part in the facilitation of integrated, complementary and inter-disciplinary approaches to improving access to care for urgent medical needs within our beneficiaries
  • Work with the investigators in the BAMC ED to capture data assessing challenges with access to care for acute issues
  • Help develop a novel system that will enable military beneficiaries to fill short notice appointments for their acute issue that otherwise would go unfilled
  • Learn how to develop scientific methods to capture data
  • Learn how to disseminate the results through scientific venues

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a three month summer research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by DHA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

About DHA

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) is a joint, integrated Combat Support Agency that enables the Army, Navy, and Air Force medical services to provide a medically ready force and ready medical force to Combatant Commands in both peacetime and wartime. The DHA supports the delivery of integrated, affordable, and high quality health services to Military Health System (MHS) beneficiaries and is responsible for driving greater integration of clinical and business processes across the MHS.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will be currently pursing or possess a Bachelor's Degree in Scientific or Engineering Studies. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. Research experience preferred.
