CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is now available with the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety (OLSS) within the Laboratory Training Facility (LTF) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Research Project: The Laboratory Training Facility (LTF) is located at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Roybal Campus, in Atlanta Georgia. The LTF is used to deliver the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety (OLSS)- specific biosafety level (BSL) 2, 3, and 4 training, emergency response actions, emergency drills, and laboratory inspections and audit training. The facility contains dedicated decontaminated space that supports research, training, and procedure development for laboratory and equipment fumigation. It is designed to provide classroom and hands-on training in a realistic environment in the absence of pathogens.

Learning Objectives: This fellowship will entail learning and collaboration opportunities with LTF staff and mentors. The selected fellow will develop skills in:

• Delivering guided tours of the LTF
• Understanding the history and uses of the LTF
• Understanding the difference between biosafety level-2, 3, and 4 practices
• Operating and maintaining the LTF
• Technical writing including the development of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Laboratory training including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) training
• Reviewing, analyzing, and integrating data to inform laboratory training-related decisions

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 5, 2024. Start date is flexible.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Virology, Biochemistry). Most recent degree must have been received within the past five years.

  • Laboratory practices (highly preferred)
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint (highly preferred)
  • Verbal and written communication (highly preferred)
  • Basic statistics (desired)
  • Electronic quality management system (eQMS) software, project management software, and/or database design (desired)
• The ideal candidate should preferably be diplomatic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, a good problem-solver, critical thinker, and able to multi-task. He/she should have excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and technical skills.
