A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of Health Systems Collaboration (OHSC) within the Office of the Associate Director for Policy and Strategy (OADPS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
OHSC’s mission is to conduct health policy work at CDC’s Atlanta locations, specifically in policy analysis, policy implementation, and policy strategies and agendas. OHSC’s goal is also to build relationships and coordinate work across CDC and within the healthcare system, other government agencies, think tanks, policy consultancies, academic institutions, and other organizations.
The participant will train in policy research, analysis, review, and translation activities. He/she will support OADP policy analysis and research efforts by conducting literature reviews on relevant public health topics and developing scientific and translation products. The participant will be part of a team that focuses on policy analysis and research, and will support projects related to the agency’s 6|18 Initiative (www.cdc.gov/sixeighteen). The 6|18 Initiative seeks to expand the coverage, access, utilization, and quality of evidence-based prevention services through partnerships with health care purchasers, health plans, and providers. OHSC works collaboratively with other CDC programs and partners to promote high value public health care policies and initiatives that will improve population health. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn how to:
- Conduct extensive literature searches and environmental scans, using PubMed and other databases
- Conduct research and analysis on a wide variety of public health-related topics
- Conduct literature reviews and synthesizing evidence for journal articles and documents to support public health policy decision-making
- Provide research assistance to support policy research projects
- Facilitate the publication of research documents (including reviews), format manuscripts for journal submission as per journal requirements, track documents through the publication process, and communicate with journal editors to facilitate publication of the documents and ensure deadlines are met
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in public health, health policy, or behavioral science. Candidates who are currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with topics related to the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, Medicare, commercial health insurers, health policy planning, and evidence review processes to identify health policy levers is strongly preferred
- Background and experience in understanding clinical data and healthcare provider networks and providers and priorities
- Experience in health policy analysis or similar field
- Ability to perform literature searches and engage in scientific writing
- Interest and experience in summarizing and translating scientific evidence for policy decision-makers
- Degree: Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
