CDC Office and LocationA summer fellowship opportunity is currently available with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducts research and makes recommendations to protect the safety and health of workers. National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health | NIOSH | CDC

Research Project: Total worker health and health communication are critical factors in worker safety and health. This project will provide a unique opportunity for the participant to receive hands-on training in understanding the total worker health needs of employees, developing appropriate messaging to address those needs, and engaging employees to maximize the reach and impact of the messaging. This project will focus on a pilot project within the Division of Science Integration, using an existing employee intranet site to test strategies for message development and delivery, and testing how successful those efforts are in engaging employees.

Learning Objectives: The participant will receive training in total worker health concepts, design of interventions, health messaging and methods of engaging employees, and will have the ability to try out what they have learned in the pilot project.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will be for three months during the summer. 

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time (40 hours per week).

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by the end of December 2022. Degree must have been received within the last five years.
