A research opportunity is currently available with the Field Research Branch (FRB), in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE), within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
NIOSH has the mandate to assure “every man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.” NIOSH has more than 1,300 employees from a diverse set of fields including epidemiology, medicine, nursing, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, chemistry, statistics, economics, and many branches of engineering.
The two primary FRB project teams that the participant will be involved with are the Center for Workers Compensation Studies team and the National Firefighter Registry team. The participant will be mentored in data science and data architecture principles needed to support research.
The participant will be a part of interdisciplinary teams that work with numerous and large data sources. The participant will learn advanced database, data warehousing, and data management skills to support health science research. The participant will learn how to leverage HL7 FHIR data standards and other data standards to support health informatics. The participant may also learn how to manage projects using Agile methods, create test plans, and create data visualization solutions to support research aimed at reducing risk of death, injury, and disease from work.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
