A research opportunity is currently available with Center for Workers' Compensation Studies (CWCS) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The mission of the CWCS is to support the use of workers’ compensation data and systems to improve workplace safety/health and injured worker care. Workers’ compensation (WC) claims may be filed after a worker is injured or becomes ill due to their job. Claims data include the nature of injury/illness, how the injury/illness occurred, the type and cost of medical care received, cost of partial wage replacement, the number of days off work, and injured worker characteristics (occupation, age, sex, length of employment). Insurers also collect employer data on workplace safety, ergonomic, and industrial hygiene exposures and controls. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:
- Conduct WC claims analyses to understand trends by industry, occupation, employer size, geographical area, injury cause, injury part of body, injury diagnoses, medical and lost-time costs, treatment type, prescription drug use (including opioids), care management (access, quantity/quality, and coordination), and worker characteristics (age, gender)
- Support research studies to understand the link between opioid use/misuse and worker industry and occupation, injury types and worker demographics
- Support research studies to identify evidence-based programs and practices that reduce opioid use/misuse and protect workers who may be exposed to opioids on the job
- Support research studies to assess the impact of healthcare factors on worker health outcomes (functional status, return-to-work, pain levels, opioid use)
- Contribute to materials and the distribution of information on the most effective prevention approaches to insurers, state workers’ compensation bureaus, and state departments of health. This includes interventions to prevent injuries and best practices for treatment of worker illness and injury, worker recovery and return-to-function.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Flexible, July to October 2019
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees and will reach completion by the application deadline. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Experience with statistical software (SAS), and data visualization software (Tableau, Power BI)
- Experience with Microsoft office tools- Excel, Access, SQL
