CDC Office and Location:  A fellowship opportunity is available with the Coronavirus And Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD) in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This opportunity is eligible to be 100% virtual within 50 miles of the appointment location.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The mission of the Coronavirus And Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD) is to improve the health of people and communities by preventing illness, disability, and death from respiratory viruses through public health science and practice in the United States and globally.  As part of the Surveillance and Prevention Branch, Epidemiology and Vaccine Assessment Team you will receive training in data management and analysis for national surveillance networks designed to examine disease burden and clinical epidemiology of respiratory viral infections.

Research Project: The COVID-19 pandemic has been a long and tragic public health crisis. More than 1 million people have died in the United States. Some segments of our population, including those who are African American, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, and living in low socioeconomic areas, have borne a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality. As such there is a critical need to address health disparities and inequities related to COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases.

The fellow will collaborate with various teams in the Surveillance and Prevention Branch to complete targeted studies related to the epidemiology of RSV, SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses. This may include studies describing viral circulation, demographic features and risk factors associated with outcomes of infection, long-term effects of respiratory virus infection, or effectiveness of interventions to prevent adverse outcomes.

CORVD is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate who is interested in developing applied skills in surveillance pertaining to COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases.

Participant activities:

• Assist with managing, reporting, visualizing, and interpreting public health surveillance data that will be used to answer applied public health research questions on characterizing disease burden and clinical epidemiology of respiratory virus infections.
• Assist with designing and refining epidemiologic protocols, to include scientific literature reviews, descriptive analyses and statistical modeling of data, and communicating and reporting trends.
• Review relevant public health information and epidemiologic input to identify and address knowledge gaps in disease burden and the clinical epidemiology of respiratory viral infections.
• Attend operational and strategic meetings to learn how programmatic decision making occurs.
• Collaborate with senior scientists to prepare and deliver written and oral reports on disease burden and clinical epidemiology

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn to:

• Gain knowledge in examining disease burden and clinical epidemiology.
• Develop skills in data management, data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.
• Understand health equity principles and their application in disease burden and clinical epidemiology.
• Enhance collaboration and communication skills collaborating with diverse stakeholders.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 10, 2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing.

Preferred Skills:

• Understanding of basic epidemiology
• Data management and data visualization skills including (but not limited to) database design, data cleaning/management, dashboard development/revising (e.g., using PowerBI)
• Some analytic software skills (e.g. SAS, R, STATA)
