CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available within the Office of the Science in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This opportunity can be part-time or full-time and is eligible for 100% telework from Atlanta, GA or San Juan, PR.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operations components of the Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) is the prevention of disease, disability, and death through immunization and by control of respiratory and related diseases. The NCIRD Office of the Director (OD) oversees, coordinates, and evaluates activities across the Center, and collaborates with the Divisions to advance strategic priorities, such as data modernization, advancing health equity, and improve ongoing operations across science, program, policy, communication, and financial and human capital management. Within the OD is the Office of Science (OS) which provides leadership across the center in epidemiologic science, surveillance, data modernization, coordination of the scientific/research agenda, and integration of health equity across the Center’s entire portfolio.

NCIRD - Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) Home | CDC

Research Project: Within the OS is the NCIRD Health Equity Science (HES) Team which supports the coordination, development, implementation, evaluation and tracking of NCIRD’s health equity portfolio and progress towards advancing health equity in the areas of science, intervention, partnerships, and infrastructure/workforce, as aligned with CDC’s CORE Health Equity framework. 

The HES Team is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate who will receive training from NCIRD mentors in developing and implementing research projects that inform the development of effective strategies and interventions that reduce disparities in vaccine-preventable pathogens and respiratory diseases among one or more disproportionately impacted populations. Effective strategies will support the guiding principle of high impact prevention, a public health approach to disease prevention in which proven, cost-effective and scalable interventions are implemented for preventing the greatest amount of infections or for reducing disparities, given available resources. Mentors and fellows will collaborate to develop a list of diverse research activities that they will complete together over training period. These activities will be based on the fellow’s area(s) of interest, training, and experience and the mission of the NCIRD.

Learning Objectives: The activities listed below represent the minimum training opportunities that the fellow will complete:

• Support activities that expand the health equity knowledge base and inform health equity science as practice among NCIRD's priority diseases and populations.
• Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external partners to address health equity and disparities and/or social determinants of health among populations who have been historically, socio-economically, or geographically disadvantaged.
• Attend monthly scientific meetings on emerging health equity issues.
• Draft and edit short research memos, one-pagers, presentations, and articles for peer-reviewed journal submissions.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 5, 2024.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is part-time, or full-time, and is negotiable.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate should be a current University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences student pursuing a master's, doctoral, or medical degree in Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Public Health, or other related disciplines. Recent graduates from UPR will also be considered, and a degree must have been received within the past five years.
