A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Influenza Division within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Epidemiology and Prevention Branch in the Influenza Division at CDC collects, compiles and analyzes information on influenza activity year round in the United States and produces FluView, a weekly influenza surveillance report. The U.S. Influenza Surveillance System is a collaborative effort between CDC and its many partners in state, local, and territorial health departments, public health and clinical laboratories, vital statistics offices, health care providers, clinics, hospitals, and emergency departments. Information in five categories is collected from nine different data sources that allow CDC to find out when and where influenza activity is occurring, track influenza-related illness, determine what influenza viruses are circulating, detect changes in influenza viruses, and to measure the impact that influenza is having on hospitalizations and deaths in the United States. This system provides the necessary data for public health professionals, and provides information to the media and general public regarding the progress and severity of the influenza season.

The research participant will be a member of the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch in the Influenza Division. Opportunities for the applicant include:

• Coordination and support of at least one of the nine components of the U.S. Influenza Surveillance System, including but not limited to the compilation and analysis of weekly influenza surveillance data
• Supporting the merger of large datasets that include data collected from multiple sources
• Providing guidance and support to CDC internal staff and external public health partners
• Participation in the assessment of select influenza surveillance components to determine their readiness for novel and pandemic influenza surveillance
• Participation in other special projects as deemed appropriate by mentor

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• Master's degree in public health or related field earned within the last five years. 
• Experience working with methodological techniques used to collect, analyze, and interpret scientific data as part of disease surveillance and epidemiological studies. 
• An understanding of infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance systems and methodology. 
• Experience with organization and management of projects and quantitative data analysis is required.   
• Database management and statistical programming and quantitative analysis (in SAS) skills are required.    
• Proficiencies in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint and Excel, required.                                 
• Experience working in infectious disease surveillance is preferred.
