A fellowship opportunity is available in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The selected participant will develop and implement activities that increase adult immunization coverage rates in the United States. S/he will collaborate with state and local health departments and national professional and stakeholder organization to implement the recommendations from the National Vaccine Advisory Committee: Standards for Adult Immunization Practice, focusing on building general awareness of, supporting providers to implement , and promoting information systems changes to accommodate the standards. Opportunities may include:
- Compiling and consolidating best practices at state and local health departments that promote and improve adult immunizations, and developing a graded intervention plan based on the infrastructure, capacity and resources available at the health department.
- Formulating and implementing strategies for state and local health departments to work with state-chapter healthcare professional organizations, accountable healthcare organizations, community health centers and quality improvement organizations to implement the national adult immunizations practice standards.
- Planning and executing effective dissemination of education and training materials on adult immunizations and the national adult immunization practice standards for healthcare providers and customers.
- Reviewing current strategies and gaps in adult immunization activities and implementing changes to improve immunization coverage for vulnerable and at-risk adult populations.
- Conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses to measure socioeconomic benefits of increased adult immunization coverage compared to other preventive health services for adults.
- Reviewing the status of immunization data exchanges and electronic health records in state and local health departments, and developing strategies to leverage Meaningful Use provisions to improve adult immunization coverage rates.
- Developing evaluation tools to measure the impact of training and other interventional activities, and identifying changes needed to increase their effectiveness.
- Presenting findings and recommendations at national forums and in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participating in the development, analyses and publication of surveys of the public and providers regarding implementation of the standards of adult immunization practice.
- Supporting and participating in the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) degree in public health, health education, or a science related field received within the last five years.
