CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) seeks a highly motivated individual to join the Injury Control Research Centers (ICRC) Program as a ORISE Fellow. The ICRC Program funds a national network of academic research centers dedicated to preventing injuries and violence through research, training, and community outreach. The ORISE Fellow will play a critical role in evaluating the impact of ICRC research and outreach efforts. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies to reduce injuries and violence.

Research Project: The main goals of the project are to

• Assess the reach and influence of ICRC research on local and national levels,
• Identify high-impact research studies that have led to policy changes or guideline development,
• Develop a framework to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of ICRC outreach activities, and
• Inform the development of a dissemination strategy for ICRC research findings.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, The fellow will contribute to these goals by learning about:

• Conducting a comprehensive analysis of ICRC annual progress reports using machine learning methodologies to identify impact areas and categorize research by type,
• Analyzing ICRC annual progress report activities to determine their reach, impact, and alignment with research findings,
• Collaborating with the Division of Injury Prevention’s Office of Communication to develop a dissemination plan for evaluation Findings, and
• Employing data science methodologies to analyze large datasets and create compelling visualizations to communicate findings.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 19, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (public health, epidemiology, statistics, or a related field). Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

• Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Python).
• Experience with research evaluation and impact assessment methodologies.
• Knowledge of injury prevention and public health.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to research independently and as part of a team.
