CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Program Implementation and Evaluation Branch (PIEB) within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. 

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is committed to preventing injuries and violence through research, community partnerships, and the translation of scientific findings into practical solutions. The Program Implementation and Evaluation Branch (PIEB) within the Division of Injury Prevention plays a pivotal role in achieving this mission. This multi-disciplinary branch is composed of Public Health Advisors, Health/Behavioral Scientists, and Evaluation Officers dedicated to supporting the division's efforts to bridge science and practice for injury prevention.

Research Project: The CDC Program Implementation and Evaluation Fellowship is an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about injury prevention and public health. As a fellow, you will collaborate closely with the Evaluation Team on various cross-divisional projects aimed at supporting CDC's partners in critical areas such as suicide prevention, indigenous evaluation for tribal injury prevention programs, and capacity building for state injury prevention programs. These programs focus on diverse topics, including transportation safety, adverse childhood experiences (ACES), traumatic brain injury, and priority injury topics of local concern (e.g., drowning, older adult falls, and suicide prevention).

Learning Objectives: During your fellowship, you will have the chance to acquire valuable skills and experience in the following areas:

• Data Collection and Analysis: You will actively participate in planning and executing both qualitative and quantitative primary data collection efforts. You may help to develop surveys, interview and focus group guides, etc. You will also help with secondary data management, cleaning, recoding, and analysis. This hands-on experience will deepen your understanding of  data science methodologies.
• Data Visualization: You will explore innovative ways to present data, making it more accessible and impactful to diverse audiences. This skill is crucial for conveying the significance of your findings.
• Translation of Findings: You will learn how to translate data findings into practical recommendations that can enhance injury prevention activities, both in the short term and long term.
• Reporting and Communication: Effective communication is key in public health. You will develop the ability to synthesize and report findings and recommendations in various formats, such as concise one-page reports, engaging conference presentations, and insightful journal articles.
• Collaboration: Our approach to evaluation is rooted in community-based participatory methods. Under supervision, you will collaborate with representatives from state health departments and other community-based organizations. You will also be encouraged to identify and pursue collaborations with colleagues across CDC, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the field.
• Injury Prevention Principles: This fellowship will immerse you in the core principles of injury prevention, providing you with a strong foundation in this critical area of public health.
• Product Support: You will play a vital role in supporting the development of knowledge translation materials and scientific publications emerging from these projects, contributing to the dissemination of critical information to the public health community.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 30, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion before January 1, 2024. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience in data cleaning and analysis using tools such as SAS, Python, R, SQL, etc.
• Experience with data visualization tools such as R, Excel, Power BI, or similar.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex information in plain language.
• Familiarity with data science, scientific writing, and program evaluation, (desired but not mandatory).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
