CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available with the Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP), within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
CDC's DOP leads injury prevention efforts by using science and data to understand drug overdoses and their related harms and to develop evidence-based prevention solutions that work. Our mission is to save lives, prevent suffering, and help reduce healthcare costs. The Division's priority is to monitor, prevent, and reduce harms associated with drug use, misuse, and overdose.
Research Project: The selected participant will be trained in the Health Systems and Research Branch (HSRB), Clinical Practice team. HSRB conducts evaluation, applied research, and demonstration projects to determine and improve the effectiveness of health system interventions; advances the collaboration between health systems and public health to reduce or mitigate the impact of overdoses and related harms through evidence-based prevention efforts; develops, implements, evaluates, and translates clinical prescribing guidelines (including health IT supports) to improve health outcomes; and serves as scientific and technical experts in clinical guidance, advanced analytic approaches, modeling, policy analysis methodologies, and medical toxicology to state and local health departments and to national advisory groups.
This fellowship will be an excellent opportunity for the selected participant interested in acquiring training and experience in the domains of health information technology standards/policies, clinical guideline translation and implementation, and health systems research and evaluation.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of the mentor, the participant(s) training activities will be in health information technology standards/policies, clinical guideline translation and implementation, and health systems research and evaluation. This will be a rich opportunity to both learn about promising health systems interventions, translation and dissemination research/evaluation, and gain experience in health informatics and collaborating with health systems and other federal partners (e.g., Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology). Based on the specific skill set and interests of the participant(s), the selected participant(s) will have the opportunity to train in other emerging research, evaluation, and/or health system overdose prevention areas as identified by the mentor.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant(s) will be involved in the following activities:
- Train and learn about health information technology standards and clinical/pharmacology informatics.
- Train and participate in the planning, development, coordination, and evaluation of health information standards and initiatives such as electronic clinical decision support tools to support CDC’s overdose prevention efforts.
- Train in the development of scientific products using evaluation, data science, and health services research methods.
- Train in the development of data resources and reports, internal scientific support products, including data manuals and presentations
- Learn about how health information technology standards can be used to support clinicians with overdose prevention, identify prescription medications at high risk of misuse, and support linkage to care for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.
- Learn to engage directly and collaborate with external and internal stakeholders.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in a relevant field or be currently pursuing the degree with completion before June 30, 2023. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills:
- Experience or knowledge regarding public health, epidemiology, health services research and evaluation
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to health information technology’s use in improving health care quality, as well as the impacts of relevant public health programs, policies, and legislation.
- Experience or knowledge related to informing public policy research with data.
- A track record or other evidence of effective communication skills and with diverse populations
- Experience or knowledge in data management and analysis
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with other scientific and professional staff on research activities.
- Experience conducting mixed methods analyses on public health data in programs such as Excel, SPSS, SAS, STATA, R, QSR NVivo, MAXQDA, Atlas. TI, or similar programs
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2023 12:00:00 AM.

I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
