CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available on the Economics Team (eT), Data Analytics Branch (DAB), Divisions of Injury Prevention (DIP), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, GA.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

NCIPC's mission is to prevent violence and injuries through science and action. DIP leads CDC's efforts to reduce unintentional injuries and self-directed harm. DAB conducts methodological research and data analysis, addresses existing data issues and new data challenges (big, complex, non-traditional data) and develops and disseminates data, tools and applications.

Research Project: This appointment will provide provide an excellent training opportunity for a master's degree fellow to gain experience conducting economic evaluations in a public health setting. Throughout the fellowship, the participant will have opportunities to collaborate with a variety of scientific researchers on a variety of projects. The participant will be mentored by an economist knowledgeable in advanced economic evaluation methods. The participant will be involved with economic evaluation of the Core State Injury Prevention Program (Core SIPP), a cooperative agreement funded by CDC’s NCIPC, to support health departments to identify and respond to existing and emerging injury threats.  

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved with and will receive training in any of the following activities related to injury and violence prevention:

  • 1. Economic and Policy Evaluation – The fellow will receive training in conducting economic and policy evaluation for funded programs within the NCIPC. The fellow will assist NCIPC’s Economics Team (eT) with an evaluation of the Core State Injury Prevention Program (SIPP). The fellow will  review Core SIPP annual progress reports and budget information and will assist in enhancing cost collection instruments and guidelines for reporting cost data.  
  • 2. Data Collection and Analysis – The fellow will receive training on the collection and analysis of program cost data. The fellow will be involved in all aspects of program cost analysis, helping to ensure high quality data are collected and analyzed. If technical assistance and webinar trainings are required as part of the evaluation, the fellow will participate in those activities.  
  • 3. Summary Reports and Presentations - The fellow will receive training on the development of summary reports based on economic evaluation findings. The fellow will assist with preparing and delivering presentations of economic and policy evaluation results at meetings, webinars, and other public forums such as national conferences. 
  • 4. Publication – The fellow will assist in the development of a publishable manuscript based on the economic evaluation study and results. The fellow will assist with conducting background research, writing and providing content editing, and proofreading documents. 
  • 5. Mentorship and Training – The fellow will receive mentorship and training for professional development. Relevant training to advance skills in economic and policy evaluation will be provided under direct mentorship of the Economics Team and additional public health courses as they become available through CDC University and CDC TRAIN will be offered to the fellow.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date:  September 6, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. A travel/training allowance may also be provided based on the discretion of the mentor and the CDC program. 

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by September 6, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
