A fellowship opportunity is available in the Extramural Research Program Office (ERPO) within the Office of the Associate Director of Science (OADS), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The mission of the NCIPC is to prevent injuries and to control and minimize the extent of injury or disability among those who are injured. Using a science-based approach, the NCIPC provides national leadership in injury prevention and control and supports research and training in the field.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will assist with systematic program assessments and contribute to ongoing projects for determining the value and impact of funded research for improved public health programs and strategies for injury prevention and control. The participant will train with ERPO staff in assessing program activities related to either development, peer review, or management of extramural research programs.
The participant will also receive training to assist with the research program evaluation activities, including training by program health scientists to learn the design, development and implementation of program plans for initial and ongoing review and evaluation findings from the NCIPC research portfolio.
The participant will be train in the following activities:

Identifying and accessing resource documents, assisting with evaluation plans, questions, and indicators, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, and interpreting data to assess the value and impact of research outcomes for improving public health programs for injury prevention and control.

Assisting with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative response data to facilitate extramural research program improvements.

Assisting with the development and dissemination of reports and presentations on program evaluation findings.

Assisting with implementing program activities related to the development, peer review, and management of extramural research.

Assist with the development of summary reports from completed research in our research priority areas; Unintentional Injury Prevention (prescription drug overdose, falls among older adults, motor vehicle injury, and traumatic brain injury) and Violence Prevention (child abuse and neglect, youth violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, self-directed violence, and cross-cutting violence prevention).

Assist with the analysis and synthesis of findings from across the NCIPC extramural research portfolio in collaboration with ADS staff to populate the research priorities tracking database.

Assist in determining what gaps remain to be addressed for the research priorities and objectives. This information is necessary to inform future announcements for research grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts to best prioritize and guide future research investments, time and, resources to have the most impact on our research priority areas.

Work with ERPO staff to update and manage content for the ERPO SharePoint site on program activities and research outcomes and results.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
