CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available within the Office of Health Equity of the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: Fellows will collaborate with mentors to develop a list of diverse research activities that they will complete together over the two year training period (subject to funding). These activities will be based on the fellow’s area(s) of interest, training, and expertise and the mission of the NCHHSTP Office of Health Equity. 

Learning Objectives: The mission of NCHHSTP's Office of Health Equity is to promote health equity, the absence of systematic unfair disparities in health, and reduce health disparities among populations disproportionately affected by HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, and other related conditions. The research fellow will receive training from NCHHSTP Office of Health Equity mentors in developing and implementing research projects that inform the development of effective strategies and activities to reduce disparities in HIV, other STDs, TB, and viral hepatitis. The activities listed below represent the minimum training opportunities that the fellow will complete: 

• Design, conduct, and interpret analyses of public health data.
• Contributing to key reports, papers, and other technical documents.
• Conducting literature searches and systematic reviews
• Write and submit at least two scientific manuscripts for a peer-reviewed journal.
• Present an oral presentation or poster at at least one scientific meeting.
• Attend monthly scientific meetings on emerging health equity issues.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for two years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (public health, health equity, epidemiology, behavioral or social sciences, public health policy). Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

• Previous experience working in the field of health equity; HIV, viral hepatitis, STDs, or TB; and/or working with disproportionately affected populations (e.g. people experiencing homelessness, people who are justice system-involved).
• Analytical skills including both quantitative and qualitative data analysis and experiencing using common analytical software (such as SAS, SUDAAN, SPSS, NVivo)
• Demonstrated evidence of oral and written communication skills (e.g., papers, manuscripts, presentations); applicants with recent publications in refereed journals on health equity; HIV, viral hepatitis, STDs, or TB; and/or disproportionately affected populations (e.g. people experiencing homelessness, people who are justice system-involved) are preferred. 
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate collaboration and feedback (e.g., conducting meetings, synthesizing and compiling information for reports or briefings)
• Applicants with documented training and skills in quantitative data analyses and evidence of research expertise or experience involving disproportionately affected populations in the United States are preferred. 

• Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 month(s).

(Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
